Driving abroad
Driving in Romania means driving on the right, with a drink drive limit of zero. no alcohol at all and motorway speeds of 130 km/h. Everything below is the practical version, the things that actually cost visitors money or time.
The Transfagarasan and Transalpina both close for winter, usually from late October until June. Plan the trip for July or September.
Once the paperwork is sorted, this is what you came for. Transfagarasan, DN7C, Transalpina, DN67C, Bicaz Gorge are among the highest scoring roads we hold in Romania, and all of them are open to any road legal car.

Romania's highest road runs along bare alpine ridgelines with almost no barriers.
Eastern Carpathians
Vertical limestone walls close in over a road carved into the gorge floor.
Bucegi Mountains
A steep dead end climb onto a high plateau of wind carved rock formations.
Bukovina
Fresh tarmac over the Rarau massif past the Lady's Rocks, and almost nobody on it.
Valcea
A river carved corridor through the Carpathians, fast and endlessly flowing.
